Mr. Sanfiel focuses on federal tax controversy, complex commercial litigation, and white‑collar defense, both civil and criminal. He has experience across the full arc of litigation, from pre‑suit investigation and pleading through discovery, dispositive motion practice, and trial preparation. Prior to joining Freeman Law, Mr. Sanfiel served as a Fall Extern in the Internal Revenue Service Office of Chief Counsel, where his work spanned the Small Business / Self-Employed, Large Business and International, and Criminal Tax divisions, and where he authored memoranda on badges of fraud, evidentiary admissibility, and fraud‑development issues arising in civil and criminal tax matters. He also completed a federal judicial internship in the chambers of then‑Magistrate Judge Irma Carrillo Ramirez, who now sits as a United States Circuit Judge on the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals.
Mr. Sanfiel earned his B.A. in Sociology from Louisiana State University and his M.A. in Criminal Justice from the University of Louisiana at Monroe, where he ranked in the top five percent of his class. He earned his J.D. from Southern Methodist University’s Dedman School of Law in 2025, where he served as a research assistant to Professor Eric Ruben, a constitutional and criminal law scholar whose work has been cited by the Supreme Court of the United States and the United States Courts of Appeals, and completed additional research under Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Christine Hurt, the inaugural Alan R. Bromberg Centennial Chair in Corporate, Partnership, Business, and Securities Law and co‑author of Bromberg & Ribstein on Partnership. He earned his LL.M. in Taxation from New York University School of Law in 2026, where he completed directed research under Professor Gregg D. Polsky, the Francis Shackelford Distinguished Professor in Taxation Law and a leading authority on partnership taxation and executive compensation.
