Legal Issues for Churches and Other Religious Organizations
Issue Spotting for Churches and Other Religious Organizations – that was the topic of presentation by Freeman Law attorney, Cory Halliburton, with attorney colleague, Harrison Smith of the HMS Law firm, to the State Bar of Texas at its 24th Annual Governance of Nonprofit Organizations Course in Austin, Texas on August 20, 2026. Mr. Halliburton is a frequent presenter at this Texas State Bar course and has twice served as its course director. Through the presentation and substantive written materials, Mr. Halliburton, along with his colleague, Mr. Smith, provided nearly 40 years of combined church law and tax acumen to those in attendance in person and on the State Bar’s webcast of the course. The presentation covered everything from What is a church? to ethical considerations for the lawyer representing religious organizations. The presenters’ mention of Romans 14, Julius Ceasar, Jerusalem, temples, mosques, and ministers all made for a colorful demonstration of the confluence of religious freedoms and secular and ecclesiastical law and tax principles.
